No More Girl Friday is my new piece for flute, oboe, piano and video commissioned by EMPOWER, a bold platform promoting women’s music. The piece takes a contemporary and whimsical look at how the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act was reported on. The musicians respond to the determination, hope, resistance and frankly laughable 1970’s sexism seen in archive footage, presented in a new video co-created with video editor Sherie Sitauze. Join us for the premiere at Bloomsbury Festival, London, on Friday 16th October 2026! The act meant that job titles could no longer be gendered and employers were no longer allowed to state a job was for a particular sex only. This meant a job title I previously hadn't heard of became outlawed: Girl Friday. Offices could still hire someone to type, file and answer the phones, but the role had to be open to everyone. Though, who did they continue to choose? Who fills other roles previously only open to one sex today? I hope my new piece provokes reflection, questions and eruptions of laughter, 50 years on since the act was passed.
